Hawatmeh meets with Salim Zaanoun, Chairman of the Palestinian National Council
March 17, 2017

Comrade Nayef Hawatmeh, Secretary General of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, held a long meeting with Salim Zanoun, head of the Palestinian National Council, in its headquarter in Amman.

In the meeting, they discussed the Palestinian situation and the decisions of the Preparatory Committee of the Palestinian National Council to form a comprehensive national unity government to end the division, and to achieve and prepare a new national council elections law in the homeland and in the countries of Diaspora, an unified law with full proportional representation, according to the national consensus decisions of the Preparatory Committee of the National Council (January 10 and 11, 2017, in Beirut), the decisions of the Central Council of the PLO (March 5, 2015, in Ramallah), the program of May 4, 2011, by the national unanimous in Cairo, the law of the new unified National Council's elections in Cairo, in February 2013, and in Amman on May 22, 2013, and the ratification of the chairman and members of the Executive Committee of PLO in May, 2013.

Also, in the meeting they discussed the regional and international situation, the invasion acts and colonial expansion of Netanyahu government, and the positions of Trump toward the Palestinian-Israeli conflict issues, and the crisis and wars in the countries of the Middle East.

Hawatmeh condemned the acts of detouring and disruption to the resolutions of consensus of the Preparatory Committee of the National Council, which called the chairman of the PLO Executive Committee to start the consultations with all factions and forces to form a comprehensive united national government to end and dismantle the destructive division tools and services, and he called to end the deepening division acts by Hamas government in Gaza and devoting two governments rather than a comprehensive national united government to end the division, and in parallel to continue the mutual action to complete achieving the overall electoral act for the PLO and the PA institutions.

The two sides agreed on the need to resume a new round of the preparatory committee of National Council to complete the comprehensive elections law, and to refuse and stop the presence of two governments in the West Bank and Gaza.

In addition to that, they discussed the need for the implementation of the Central Council resolutions of PLO (March, 2015), and the resolutions of the Preparatory Committee of the National Council and the National Consensus Program, and submitting complaints to the International Criminal Court about the war crimes and the Israeli settlements and assassinations.

Also, the need to return to the United Nations to internationalize the Palestinian national rights and issue and the active membership resolution to the State of Palestine in the United Nations and its institutions, and holding an international conference for peace with the reference of the legitimacy resolutions and sponsored by the permanent five members of the UN Security Council instead of the US unilateralism, and the terms of Trump for the direct bilateral negotiations without preconditions, while the colonization of Israeli settlement activity does not stop, and the Israelization and Judaization of the occupied Arab Jerusalem does not stop.

Salim Zanoun, the president of the National Council, called to convene a new session for the Central Council of PLO, which has not been convened since March, 2015, while the major risks on the Palestinian national rights and issue are worsening around us regionally and internationally.

He pointed to the Netanyahu-Lieberman government's plans, and the statements of the US President Trump, to hold a regional conference, attended by Israel and Arab countries, in order to normalize the Arab-Israeli relations firstly, and ignore the international legitimacy resolutions, especially the UN resolution 67/19 about the "recognition of the state of Palestine on the borders of June 4, 1967, and its capital East Jerusalem", as an observer member in the United Nations, with a majority of 138 states which form 80% of the world's population, and the rights of the refugees in accordance with UN resolution 194, and the resolution of the Security Council 2334 which unanimously condemned the settlements and called to stop the settlement activity in the occupied territories in 1967.

The convening a new session of the Central Council of PLO, is an Arab and national need to confront the regional and international risks which are surrounding us, and implement the Central Council and Preparatory Committee of the National Council resolutions.
